The first disadvantage of VoIP is its 911 emergency service. VoIP is not based on geography and it has problems connecting. PSTN telephone networks (911 emergency services are build from) has your home address provided inside of their phone system that is given to the 911 phone operator. Which VoIP does not provide. Two types of 911 emergency services. 911 and E911. 911 is the traditional method of dialing 911 and the operator will be connected to the address you gave to your provider when you signed up for VoIP. Your physical address information is not reported. E911 is enhanced 911. E911 is when your address is in electronic form and given to the operator. If you have the inability to speak, the operator has the ability to have police and the fire department sent to your physical address.

Second disadvantage of VoIP is its dependency on your internet connection for it to work properly. If you are experiencing problems with your internet service provider (ISP) and you have lost connection, you will be unable to place any VoIP calls. ISPs are known to be very reliable but relying on VoIP could get you in trouble. VoIP should not be your main source for telecommunications. It should be used as a secondary phone in your home. If your internet connection is down, you are out of luck most of the time. Calling 911 for any reason is serious and VoIP cannot provide the right services at this time.

A third disadvantage of VoIP occurs when your internet connection in your local area suffers from a power outage. Since your internet connection is down, VoIP cannot run properly. It relies solely on your internet connection. Regular phone services do not have this problem with connectivity. Phone providers have ways to keep your phone connection running smoothly in case of an accident. Some ISPs are trying to fix this problem. Many of them have backup plans but many of them do not. Which makes VoIP an untrustworthy service to have when you need to call someone during a power outage.

Your internet connection could still function properly during a power outage but your router or modem would not have power for you to access it without other backup devices. You would still be unable to access your VoIP services. Many VoIP subscribers have a backup telephone service just in case of an emergency to solve the problem of a power outage. Cellular phones are used as a backup source as well but cellular signals can be in question when power outages affect the local area. Which means your cellular phone cannot be used. Which makes this a disadvantage of VoIP.

The last disadvantage of VoIP, it is less secure than a basic telephone service. Intercepting phone calls over the internet is highly unlikely but it is possible. Some telephone providers are using the internet to transmit long distance calls. Many of the problems can be addressed by some phone providers and internet service providers. VoIP was a great idea to connect people to talk to each other over the internet. Chatting online with friends over Yahoo! messenger free was a great feature. VoIP’s advantages will win over most of the people that its services. It will save you a lot of money and it contains great features that will keep you wanting more from the service.
